Students in grades 6-12 work on extensive research projects centered around a theme. This project addresses multiple content state standards including identifying primary and secondary sources within research.

Within their schools, they compete and send finalists to Pasco History Day. Judges evaluate the projects and choose finalists to send on to the state competition in Tallahassee. At each stage of the competition, students can make changes and edits to their projects.

This program motivates students to discover history by:

  • Cultivating interest: students research a topic of their choice

  • Developing research skills: students act as historians: uncover primary sources, build historical context, and form historical interpretations. Analyze sources for bias

  • Becoming experts on their research topic: presenting their research to teachers, students, and historians

What's in it for the student?

  • Students who have participated in NHD outperform other students on district and state assessments

  • The shy student gains confidence when speaking about a topic he/she has researched

  • The apathetic student gains passion by choosing a topic of personal interest

  • The high achieving student increases his/her ability to articulate their learning through presentation

  • Increase research skills

  • Build collaborative relationships with peers

  • Develop tech and public speaking skills

Pasco History Day Contest is virtual because we want to offer our judges the ability to spend more time reviewing projects and making helpful comments for students. We also know it is difficult for students to get transportation to the district office, and we do not want them to miss too much instructional time.

Students in 6th through 12th grades conduct extensive research on topics related to an annual theme and present their findings as historical papers, exhibits, documentaries, performances, and websites.

This year's theme is Frontiers in History and additional information can be found here

Judges should read through the NHD rule book to familiarize themselves with the project requirements. NHDRuleBook2021Digital.pdf

Pasco County History Day utilizes virtual judging. This means you have a week to review the projects assigned to you and give comments. We rely on consensus judging. That means that instead of giving entries numeric scores, you will be ranking them. To streamline the process, we will ask you to email your rankings to Mrs. Dill so we can compile them with the other judges.

Addtional information will be sent to you as we get closer to the judging dates.
